I'm C.J. Cornthwaite. I have a PhD in Christian Origins from the University of Toronto, an MA in theology, and an MDiv.

HOW IT WORKS
This is a live cohort, not a video library.
You'll meet with me and a small group each week. You'll do the exercises, get them wrong, and get them explained. You'll have somewhere to ask the question you're embarrassed to ask.
I'm structuring it this way for one reason: almost nobody finishes a language course alone. The materials aren't what makes the difference. Showing up on a Tuesday (not the official day) because other people are expecting you is what makes the difference.
Expect a few hours of homework per week outside the sessions. Greek is not hard, but it is cumulative — the people who succeed are the ones who do a little most days rather than a lot on Sundays (also not the official day).

ABOUT THE COURSE
This is not a survey course.
You will not learn about Greek. You will learn Greek.
We'll work through Jeremy Duff's The Elements of New Testament Greek, which is a standard beginner's grammar at universities and seminaries, and the book I learned from. Alphabet to participles. Real Greek, from the first week.
By the end you'll know the alphabet, the case system, the main verb tenses, and enough grammar to work through a verse with a lexicon — slowly, but on your own.
Nobody is fluent after one course. But you'll be able to open a Greek New Testament, decode a sentence, and see what the translators were dealing with.
